Quaid-e-Awam founded the Pakistan Peoples Party in Lahore in 1967 and led it to power on the promise of roti, kapra aur makaan. As President and then Prime Minister, he gave Pakistan its unanimous 1973 Constitution, brought home 90,000 prisoners of war through the Simla Agreement and hosted the Muslim world at the 1974 Islamic Summit in Lahore.

He was executed on 4 April 1979 after a trial that remains deeply contested. For party workers, his shahadat made him a permanent symbol of resistance.

The Daughter of the East led the party through its hardest years and, in 1988, became the first woman ever elected to lead a modern Muslim state. She served twice as Prime Minister of Pakistan. Her return from exile in 1986 brought Lahore to a standstill in one of the largest receptions the city has ever seen.

She was assassinated in Rawalpindi on 27 December 2007. The Benazir Income Support Programme, Pakistan's largest social safety net, carries her name.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari

بلاول بھٹو زرداری

Named chairman in the days after his mother's shahadat, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari leads the party alongside the co-chairman. As Pakistan's Foreign Minister from 2022 to 2023 he represented the country across the world, and as chairman he has focused the party on youth, climate and a new generation of workers.
